Silverfish are typically between 12 and 19mm long and can be spotted by the silvery-blue colour that gives them their name. Also known as fish moths or carpet sharks, their wiggly movements resemble that of a fish, although they are, of course, an insect.
Silverfish have destructive eating habits that can result in these small insects doing large damage to valuable items around the house. Although they are not directly harmful to humans they can cause damage to valuable books, photographs and paintings and will leave tiny feeding marks on objects in the form of holes or small notches.
These creatures do well in humid conditions, such as bathrooms, kitchens, lofts and cellars, where they will live in the dark damp areas.
